Today was again a repeat of the previous day – with perhaps slightly more weight than the carry. I didn’t really take any photos because well, you’re not going to believe this, but things looked pretty similar to how they did yesterday! Amazing, I know.
Our packs are getting lighter now that we’re consuming food and fuel going up the mountain. I’d say they’re at around 35-40 lbs now. Very reasonable, but we keep going higher so overall I’d say the difficulty has remained the same so far. I do feel myself getting stronger though, I didn’t have as much trouble on this day than I did yesterday. That said, knowing how much of a slog it is can be pretty wearing. That and the fact that the terrain is identical to what you’ve seen before doesn’t do much for variety.
Weather was similarly perfect to yesterday, and with slightly less wind too, but it was still pretty windy at the saddle where we again stopped for a break. Then our next break was at another windy location. We clearly pick our rest stops well here on Aconcagua! I say that but the section leading up to this was very steep – not really conducive to stopping so you don’t have much of a choice. It was nice that we didn’t have to come back down today though, making it a shorter day. We’ve gotten really lucky so far and are hoping that everything stays that way. We’re now at about 18,500 ft (15,600 m) so the air is getting quite thin. Tomorrow we’ll be up at 19,500 at Camp Three which would represent a new high for me – breaking Kilimanjaro at 19,341. To think I’ll be sleeping at a higher elevation than Kili’s summit is pretty exciting!
