Today was hard! After a hearty breakfast in our dome tent, we set out carrying about 50 lbs(23 kg) up to Camp One. Luckily the weather had cleared up and we had a blue sky day with no wind, as perfect as can be. Looks like the forecast for the rest of our climb is similarly positive. We’re just hoping it stays that way.
To be honest today wasn’t bad for the majority of the ascent – I felt pretty strong. The last 1,000 ft (300 m) however were killer. Loose scree and steep slopes made this part brutal. Luke, Alison and Craig sped on ahead while everyone else had to take this section slower. I think everyone eventually fell behind Luke, who despite his vehement denial, quadrupled the pace for the last section to show off(just kidding Luke, I know you only doubled the pace!)
We did all make it to Camp One, though totally exhausted. After taking our carry loads out and stashing them under some rocks, we headed back down to Base Camp. The descent is what makes carry days harder than move days, despite carrying about the same weight. It makes the day longer and increases muscle fatigue and recovery time.
Back at Base Camp, we had another great meal before settling in for the night. The local operator Grajales Expeditions, really knows how to cook well, every meal they made was just incredible. Of course the seasoning known as hunger helps as well!
